Small Things

Print, Photography

This book talks about the feeling of having, losing, then remembering having. The text is selected poems from Donald Hall's Without. The project was selected to be part of Context 2010, Pittsburgh AIGA's annual design competition, where it won the Design Excellence Award.

Photography

All the images are self-created. The photo series shown throughout the book are still-lifes comprised of objects Hall mentions in his book. One object is removed from each photograph and the rest of the objects are reorganized and sometimes switched out for similar objects (i.e. A bouquet of white daisies are switched with a single pink carnations). All the photographs are shown in sequence on the last page.

Typography

The goal of the book was the reinvent the experience of the book. Typography was key at setting the new pacing. Overall, the typography is set playfully to highlight parts of passages and allows for repetition. Not all type is meant to be read, some are meant to be textures, and some are meant to set a specific mood. It was also a learning challenge to marry typography with the images on a page, allowing the two to compliment each other.

Grid System

Since in the photographs, all the objects are laid out on a 6 column grid, the grid of the book is also set to a 6 column grid. The column grid system allows for much flexibility, and each page should allow for surprises despite a sense of consistency throughout the book.
