Ye Shanghai
Type design, Print
Typeface based on women's fashion and the style of old Shanghai (1930's), emphasizing a feminine and decorative quality. A working progress.
Process
The typeface is inspired by the modernness of Didot and the decorative elements of Bodoni. During the process of designing the face, I started by looking at my two inspirations, drawing conclusions and finding patterns. From there, I grouped similar letters together in different ways, to see how each letter influences others in order to create a consistent typeface.
The process was very methodical. Under the guidance of my instructor, Stacie Rohrbach, I was able to scrutinize typography from a completely different perspective. By creating type instead of just using them, I not only learned to appreciate how much work goes into the design of the faces, I also learned so much about the details of each face, readability of typefaces, and how subtleties could change the personality of a type and how it should be used in design.
